Set the Originator Address to your company or brand name

The Originator Address is the value within each SMS text message that is displayed on the receiving device as the Message Originator (Sender ID). Many mobile network operators support setting the Originator Address dynamically, which means that your SMS text messages can be branded with your own company name or telephone number.

Options for setting the Originator Address

When you sign-up for a Connection Software account you can register a single default Originator Address. This can be a mobile number that you own or your company or service name, e.g. "AppDownload". If you need to use more than one company name, brand name or number, consider the options given below.

Use a Virtual Mobile Number or Short Code Number

Often referred to as Two-way SMS services, we can provision a Virtual Mobile Number or Short Code Number for you to use as the Originator Address of your outgoing messages. We will receive replies to these messages on our SMS gateway and then pass them to you either by email or through one of our Developer APIs.

Use a mobile number that you own

An alternative to using a Virtual Mobile Number or Short Code Number is to use a mobile phone number that you own or have permission to use as the Originator Address. Any replies will come in directly on the mobile phone number that you specify.

Use your company or brand name

You can set the Originator Address to your company or brand name using a maximum of 11 alpha-numeric characters. The recipients of your messages will not be able to reply to your messages sent with an Alpha-Numeric Originator Address. If you need to receive replies to your messages you must either use a Virtual Mobile Number, Short Code Number, or a mobile number that you own.

Use a dynamic value for each message

You can set the Originator Address dynamically to any for each individual message that you submit to our SMS gateway for delivery. This enables you to support a range of services with the Originator Address set appropriately depending on the service or campaign message you are sending. The use of this service requires you to register for our Dynamic Originator Address Service.

Character set for Alpha-Numeric Originator Addresses

The following characters and numbers from the ASCII character set are available to use for the Originator Address:

@ _ ! # & ' * 0 < , % ( ) + - . / 0 1 2 3 4 5 6

	R S T U V W X Y Z a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p

By using alternative Originator Addresses you agree to abide by the principles of mobile marketing recommended by the Mobile Marketing Association Code of Practice.

Country-specific restrictions on the use of Dynamic Originator Addresses

We optimise our routing to maximise the availability of the Dynamic Originator Address feature. However there are countries where national regulations for mobile communcations limit or prevent the use of this feature. Where more stringent regulations apply, we may be able to pre-register Originator Addresses. Check our network coverage pages for more information about network-specific restrictions.
