Java Applet* Development

Why use a Java Applet?

Whilst SMS text messages can deliver 160 text characters to almost any phone a Java Applet can deliver a full interactive program on the phone. As a result we can display images and text, play sounds and provide input boxes for the user. The user's responses can be instantly sent to our servers and new information quickly displayed.

Message costs may well be cheaper than standard SMS. Instead of you paying a fixed price per message, your customer just pays for their GPRS traffic so the total costs are likely to be lower.

What will it look like on the phone?

With an SMS message

From: +44770091234

How long is it since
you went to the
theatre?

1=7 days
2=1 month
3=6 months
4=1 year or more

With a Java Applet

You can include one or more images, text with different fonts and colours as well as input boxes and sound. The display can be much more sophisticated if you wish; bear in mind that mobile games are also written in Java. Connection Software has developed a very flexible template-based system that will enable you to offer smart applications rapidly.

Unlike an SMS message you do not delete the message when finished, instead you exit the application. Facilities can be provided to save information on the phone for later review.

What type of applications are most suitable for a Java Applet
Services which draw information from a database, which require the user to interact or which would benefit from images are clear candidates for a Java Application.
